Steady wind … strong wind …
Fine sand whirling past.
Palm trees bending low …
and ever lower … Break ?
Will the trunk snap ?
Never! I have never seen
it snapping … Pieces break off
but never a broken tree.

1975 Death Valley, California : SPRING
While driving thru a barren desert I glimpsed a red band circling around a hill.
I stopped, got out, and walked a quarter-mile to the base of the hill.
What could that red stripe be ?
It was a pile of red beetles … 2 or 3 deep …
too wide to step over … too wide to jump over …
Reddish orange with a black edge and each one inch long …
each individual struggling to reproduce the species.
Shining in the sun … copulating …
Why was this strip of land their chosen place to gather ?
But … Can We Live There?

Strange structures on a far-flung world. Made by creatures? By natural processes? Of the many, many worlds in our galaxy are there some touched by old civilizations?

Were we able to fly out in space and look back on our planet we might see the Aurora Borealis in full glory … this is a sight humankind has only been able to see in the last few decades. Named for the goddess of dawn, Aurora, it is also called the Northern Lights. We live in an exciting era!

Enceladus is one of the moons of Saturn and has black sands and methane fountains. One of the most volcanically active bodies in our solar system, it spews forth methane and has methane lakes. A spectacle which would be awesome to see!

Overnight … rain and thunderstorms … in the morning blue sky and a walk at
8 am in Estero LLano where all the trees are draped in glittering spider webs.
Backlit by the rising sun the ordinarily invisible webs are revealed by the raindrops pearled on each delicate loop.

Estero Llano Web
spider webs looped from tree to tree …
and on the fences …
and then a glimpse of the architect of the webs.
He is a tiny creature in an unusual shape.

Mars …
Swinging around out there in space. Considered a hostile environment … Carbon Dioxide atmosphere, frozen water, less gravity, astonishingly beautiful! Smaller than the Earth … What mineral treasures will be found there ?
The Red Planet … covered with the glow of red iron oxide dust. Close to Earth, yet a tantalizing distance away … a mystery to be reflected upon and studied.
Mars, named after the Roman god of war, has two “moons” which are named Phobos (panic/fear) and Deimos (terror/dread). Humans have projected their fears and hopes into space … mythic names for these objects in space.
Phobos and Deimos have a close orbit to Mars … even though they are smaller than our moon they would appear larger if seen from Mars. This is an artistic “guess,” not a scientific fact!
Whizzing by Mars on October 19th, 2014 is the Comet Sliding Spring. It is a massive ball of “dirty ice” putting on a spectacular show while it sheds bits and pieces into space.
Here they are again … the magic moons circling Mars.
For half a century there has been speculation about the possibility of alien life on Mars … is this a whirlwind of sand or two Martians conversing ? ? or ……. ?
The burning question for centuries was “Is the Earth the center of the universe?” Has the center (of scientific study) shifted to Mars ?
Phobos, a moon of Mars, passing in front of the Sun. From photos taken 3 seconds apart revealing … Beauty !
How Could This Be??

Evening May 20th … Eclipse day
We drove up to Carson Pass at 6 pm to be in time for the 6:28 “dark” … when the moon moves in front of the sun and obscures most of the sun, leaving the “ring of fire” effect. It all went like clockwork and we zipped down to our house at 6:35 … and then the strangest effect of all …
our plain ship-lap garage wall had all these reflections on it … it must have been the effect of the angle the setting sun … or what ????
In 10 minutes the effect of many eclipses faded off the wall … see photos …
another amazing visual effect!!
The world is mysterious …
